What Is an Age Calculator?

An age calculator is an online tool that computes your exact age from your date of birth to today (or any chosen date). Rather than simply subtracting the birth year from the current year โ€” which ignores whether your birthday has passed this year โ€” a proper age calculator accounts for the exact month and day, giving you a precise result in years, months, and days.

Our free age calculator also shows you the day of the week you were born on, your total days and weeks lived, your zodiac sign, and how many days remain until your next birthday.

Why Calculate Your Exact Age?

Knowing your precise age is useful in many situations:

  • Legal eligibility: Verifying you meet age requirements for driving, voting, drinking, retirement, or pensions.
  • Medical screening: Many health screening guidelines (mammograms, colonoscopies, prostate checks) are tied to specific ages.
  • Insurance: Premiums often change on your birthday, so knowing exactly how many days are left can help you time a policy purchase.
  • Milestone celebrations: Planning significant birthdays โ€” 18, 21, 30, 50, 65 โ€” or working out when you hit 10,000 days old.
  • Immigration and visas: Many visa categories have strict upper age limits that are checked to the day.
  • Genealogy and history: Calculating the age of ancestors or historical figures at key events.

How Does the Age Calculation Work?

The calculator uses the Gregorian calendar (the standard civil calendar used in the US, UK, Australia, and most of the world). The calculation proceeds as follows:

  1. Compare the birth date to the "as of" date (default: today).
  2. Calculate the difference in full years โ€” a year only completes when the full calendar anniversary has passed.
  3. Calculate remaining months and days after subtracting the complete years.
  4. Count the total number of calendar days between the two dates, correctly accounting for leap years (February 29).

The day of the week is determined using the Tomohiko Sakamoto algorithm, a well-tested calendar algorithm reliable across all dates in the Gregorian calendar.

What Is a Zodiac Sign?

The Western zodiac divides the year into 12 signs based on the position of the Sun at your time of birth. The dates shown here are the standard Sun sign dates used in Western astrology: Aries (Mar 21 โ€“ Apr 19), Taurus (Apr 20 โ€“ May 20), Gemini (May 21 โ€“ Jun 20), Cancer (Jun 21 โ€“ Jul 22), Leo (Jul 23 โ€“ Aug 22), Virgo (Aug 23 โ€“ Sep 22), Libra (Sep 23 โ€“ Oct 22), Scorpio (Oct 23 โ€“ Nov 21), Sagittarius (Nov 22 โ€“ Dec 21), Capricorn (Dec 22 โ€“ Jan 19), Aquarius (Jan 20 โ€“ Feb 18), Pisces (Feb 19 โ€“ Mar 20).

Frequently Asked Questions

The "Calculate As Of" field lets you calculate what someone's age was on a specific historical date, or what it will be on a future date. For example, you could find out how old your grandmother was on the day you were born, or how old you will be on your retirement date.

Yes. For people born on February 29, the calculator correctly handles non-leap years by treating March 1 as the effective birthday in those years. The total days lived is always accurate regardless of whether your birth year was a leap year.

It counts the exact number of calendar days from the "as of" date to the next occurrence of your birth month and day. If today is your birthday, it shows 0 days. The calculation accounts for whether the next birthday falls in the same calendar year or the next.

You can use this calculator to check your current total days. 10,000 days is approximately 27 years and 4-5 months depending on leap years. It is a fun milestone celebrated by some as a "ten thousandth day birthday." Once you know your total days, subtract from 10,000 to find how many days remain.

Absolutely. Just enter the other person's date of birth. You can also use the "Calculate As Of" field to check their age at a specific historical event โ€” for example, how old a grandparent was when a particular event occurred.
