How Our Unit Converter Works

The converter uses a two-step base-unit method. Every unit in a given category is defined by a conversion factor relative to a chosen base unit. To convert from unit A to unit B, the input value is first multiplied by A's factor to get the equivalent in the base unit, then divided by B's factor to get the result in B. Temperature is handled separately using the direct algebraic formulas between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin, since temperature scales differ by both scale and offset (not just scale).

Results are displayed with up to six significant digits to maintain accuracy for both very large and very small values, while trailing zeros are stripped to keep the display clean. For values that are whole numbers or simple fractions, the display will naturally show fewer digits.

Tips for Accurate Unit Conversion

Always double-check which variant of a unit is intended. "Gallon" means different volumes in the US (3.785 L) and the UK (4.546 L) — this tool uses the US gallon. Frequently Asked Questions

Strictly speaking, mass is the amount of matter in an object (measured in kilograms), while weight is the force that gravity exerts on that mass (measured in Newtons). In everyday usage, however, "weight" is used informally to mean mass. The units in the Weight tab (grams, kilograms, pounds, etc.) are technically mass units, but this matches how they are used in daily life, commerce, and most non-physics contexts.

Temperature scales are offset from each other, not just scaled. The Celsius and Fahrenheit scales place their zero points at different physical temperatures. 0°C is the freezing point of water, which equals 32°F. The conversion formula is: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. This means a change of 1°C equals a change of 1.8°F, but the actual numeric values are offset by 32. Kelvin starts at absolute zero (-273.15°C), so 0°C = 273.15 K.

Exactly 2.54 centimeters. This is the defined, exact relationship established in 1959 by the international yard and pound agreement. One foot is therefore exactly 30.48 cm, and one yard is exactly 91.44 cm. One mile equals exactly 1,609.344 meters, derived from this same definition.

A US customary cup is exactly 236.588 mL (8 US fluid ounces). A metric cup, used in Australia and Canada, is exactly 250 mL. This tool uses the US cup definition. The difference is about 5.6%, which is noticeable in baking recipes — always check which cup your recipe is designed for.

To convert km/h to m/s, divide by 3.6 (since 1 km/h = 1000 m / 3600 s = 1/3.6 m/s). So 100 km/h = 27.78 m/s. To go the other way, multiply m/s by 3.6. This conversion comes up frequently in physics problems, weather reports (wind speed), and sports science.
