What Is a Random Team Generator?
A random team generator takes a list of names and randomly divides them into a set number of groups, or groups of a set size. It removes human bias from team selection — no more picking friends first or repeatedly choosing the "strongest" players — and turns a manual, argument-prone process into a fair, instant split. This tool shuffles your list using an unbiased randomization algorithm and then distributes names as evenly as possible across every team.
It's commonly used by teachers organizing classroom groups, sports coaches setting up practice matches, event organizers running trivia nights or hackathons, and managers splitting staff into project teams. Because everything runs in your browser, you can generate as many random splits as you like without any signup or data leaving your device.
How Fair Distribution Works
When the number of names doesn't divide evenly into the number of teams, this tool distributes the remainder one name at a time to the first few teams rather than dumping every leftover name onto the last group. For example, splitting 10 names into 3 teams produces two teams of 4 and one team of 3 — never one team of 4 and two teams of 3 with a lopsided distribution. This keeps every team as close to equal size as mathematically possible.
How to Use This Tool
- Paste or type your list of names into the text box, one name per line.
- Choose whether you want to specify the number of teams (e.g., split into 4 teams) or the number of names per team (e.g., 5 people per team).
- Enter the corresponding number.
- Click Generate Teams. Names are shuffled randomly and split as evenly as possible.
- Click Copy Result to copy the full team list to your clipboard — ready to paste into a chat, email, or spreadsheet.
- Click Try Example to see the tool in action with 10 sample names split into 3 teams.
