What Is EXIF Data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data is metadata embedded in digital photos by the camera or smartphone that captured them. EXIF data includes the date and time the photo was taken, camera make and model, lens information, exposure settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), and — most critically for privacy — GPS coordinates showing the exact location where the photo was taken. This location data is accurate to within a few meters and is embedded in the image file invisibly — it does not appear in the photo itself but is readable by anyone with the right software.

EXIF GPS data poses real privacy risks that most people are unaware of. Posting photos of your home on real estate listing sites, social media, or classifieds can reveal your home address to anyone who extracts the EXIF data. Journalists, activists, and anyone in a sensitive situation who shares photos can inadvertently reveal their location. Stalking cases have been documented where perpetrators extracted GPS data from photos shared on social media to locate their targets. Which Platforms Strip EXIF Data Automatically?
Some major platforms strip EXIF data automatically on upload — Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter remove location data from uploaded photos. However, many platforms do not strip EXIF data: Flickr preserves full EXIF data. WhatsApp preserves EXIF in some sharing modes. Email attachments preserve EXIF data. Direct file sharing (Dropbox, Google Drive links) preserves EXIF. Websites built with user uploads may or may not strip EXIF depending on server configuration. Can EXIF data be removed from PNG files?
PNG files use a different metadata format (PNG chunks). Our tool uses the canvas redraw method which works on JPEGs. PNG files typically contain less sensitive metadata than JPEGs.
Does iPhone automatically embed GPS in photos?
Yes, by default. You can disable location for the camera app in Settings → Privacy → Location Services → Camera → Never. Or remove location data after capture before sharing.
