How This Typing Tutor Works

This free typing tutor teaches touch typing through 22 progressive lessons grouped into Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced tiers β€” starting with single home row fingers, building through the top and bottom rows, then moving on to numbers, shifted symbols, capitalization, full sentences, programming keywords, and a randomly generated speed challenge. Each lesson shows a target string above the text box β€” type it exactly, and every character is highlighted green when correct or red when wrong as you go.

Alongside the text box sits a dark demo panel with an animated hand diagram β€” both hands, pinky to thumb. Fingers used in the current lesson are shown in full color, while unused fingers stay grey, so you always know which digits a lesson is training. Click Play (or Restart Lesson) to watch a step-by-step demo: each character in the lesson highlights the correct finger and the matching key on the keyboard below it in sync, held briefly like a real keystroke, with the current character and finger named underneath (e.g. "a" β†’ Left Index Finger). Use Pause, Next, and Reset to control playback, and the speed slider to slow it down or speed it up. The moment you start typing yourself, the demo pauses automatically and every key you press gives a quick highlight on both the keyboard and the hand diagram instead. Finish a lesson with at least 70% accuracy to unlock the next one β€” your unlocked lessons and current position are saved in your browser's local storage, so you can close the page and pick up where you left off.

Focus Mode

Click Focus Mode to enter true browser fullscreen β€” the navigation bar, footer, lesson sidebar, and demo/hand panel are all hidden, leaving just the stats bar and typing area. A larger on-screen keyboard appears below the text box in their place, with the same finger color-coding and key-press highlighting as the panel keyboard. Press Escape (the browser's built-in fullscreen shortcut) or click the button again to exit.

How to Use the Typing Tutor

  1. Pick a lesson from the sidebar (or dropdown on mobile) β€” lessons you haven't unlocked yet are greyed out.
  2. Type the target text shown in the box exactly as written, including punctuation and spacing.
  3. Click Play on the demo panel to watch the hand diagram and keyboard demonstrate the whole lesson, character by character.
  4. When you finish the lesson, check your WPM and accuracy in the stats bar.
  5. Score 70% accuracy or higher to unlock Next Lesson β€” clicking it early shows how far you are from 70%.
  6. Use Restart Lesson any time to try the current lesson again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Touch typing is built on muscle memory. Moving to a harder lesson before you're comfortable with the current one reinforces bad habits, so a 70% accuracy threshold keeps you progressing at a pace where the fundamentals actually stick.

Yes. Your current lesson and unlocked lessons are stored in your browser's local storage, so they'll still be there the next time you visit β€” as long as you use the same browser and don't clear your site data.

Every key on the keyboard, and every finger on the hand diagram, is colored by which of your eight fingers or two thumbs should press it, following the standard touch-typing finger chart. Press Play and the demo panel steps through the lesson automatically β€” each finger presses down and releases in sync with its key, with the current character and finger named below (e.g. "a" β†’ Left Index Finger). Use Pause, Next char, or Reset to control it, and the speed slider to change the pace. Starting to type yourself automatically pauses the demo and switches to a quick pulse on the key and finger you actually pressed.

Yes. Any lesson you've already unlocked stays unlocked, so you can jump back to it from the lesson list at any time to practice again.

No. Everything happens in your browser using JavaScript, and the only thing stored is your lesson progress, saved locally on your device.
